It may not be a job, but it’s definitely the work I both want and need.
The St. Lucie County editor at Scripps e-mailed me to say she looked at my resume and clips and would like to talk to me about freelance opportunities next week. She’s going to give me a starter story, and then we’ll go from there. Since there won’t be any open positions this year, my goal is to have made myself a household name at The Fort Pierce Tribune by the time something does become available.
The pay is about $50 per story, but phone calls and mileage aren’t covered. Since they have several freelancers, there is no guarantee on a certain number of stories per week for me. However, the upside is that I work off site, receiving and sending stories via e-mail and phone.
Later, I realized the “site” is The Tribune building, just a minute walk from my new place. It’s literally right around the corner. Just when I can see my dream of being able to bike to work coming to life, I can work from home.
But don’t think I’m complaining – I honestly can’t wait to meet her and get my first assignment.

That is a good start. It does not hurt to give it a try until a paying newspaper gives you a real job. You will have many tough decisions to make over the next year. JDB OUT
