I accompanied my friend and former boss Linette Trabulsy to the annual FPRA media forum where the Treasure Coast’s big wigs in journalism and public relations came together for discussions and networking. After putting in my dues during the setup process, I attended two panel discussions.
The first one, led by local publishers, brought up more questions than I anticipated in their “Inside the Newsroom” session. Halfway through, the discussion turned to correspondents. After the about the fifth person complained, I raised my hand.
I said that as a correspondent, I have the training and skills to do the job properly, but I can’t say that for certain about the others. If the newspaper is going to keep relying on correspondents, won’t that affect the quality of journalism?
The next session I attended was “Understand Roles in the TV Newsroom” led by local reporters. The interesting subject of user-submitting material came up, and I asked them to explain how they check the credibility of the photographs or video.
A couple people complimented my questions later, but I still can’t believe I had not only had the nerve but felt comfortable to speak up like that in front of so many people. I met many professionals in both fields, and a few public relations people have my contact information for story tips.
But the most important thing I took from today – it’s time to make some business cards.

After all we’ve been through together, Ms. Blanford, did you really spell my name wrong in the “tags?”
